While the Darcys adjusted to the changes in their household, another stranger was made welcome, but not at Pemberley. As a guest in the home of the local physician. Dr. Avery Middlesworth, a man of precision and fact, was not much for the interactions between members of society. As a man who chose to specialize in the relatively new discipline of forensics, he found the dead to be far less demanding. A medical expert, his testimony was often relied upon to determine the guilt or innocence of those accused of the worst sorts of crime. For this reason, he insisted upon not having any contact with the accused parties than was necessary. However, he had to admit that the case before him was fascinating and would have leapt at the opportunity even if the recommendation had not come from his old friend Edmund Matthews. An accusation of murder against one such as Fitzwilliam Darcy took considerable nerve. The manâs reputation as a highly respected gentleman was well known, but he would put this aside and focus on fact alone. Evidence, if not compromised by clumsy interference was the best voice of truth.
âI shall begin examining the victim first thing in the morning,â he said after sharing an excellent luncheon and reminiscing on their days together in medical school.
âSpectacular. The body is being kept on ice, and you are welcome to use my surgery.â
âThank you, but it may be best that we do not speak of it. I shall use a room in the cellars of the police station.â
âOf course, of course. Must maintain integrity and all that.â
Middlesworth was pleased that his friend had let the topic drop, he did not want any suggestion of compromise. Many police did not like the interference of one they considered of their ranks, but Sir Ronald Renfrew was different. A true rarity that a peer and elected magistrate was also a man learned of science. His approval had not been necessary, but it definitely would make his job much easier, especially when it came to what might seem to many, rather odd requests.
âBut I would like to see the actual scene, this evening if it is not too much trouble. For this, I will require your presence as you were there when they found him. Your memory will be crucial.â
âIâll do my best, but as I was focused on a potentially still living person, I may not have noticed much else.â
âAll the same, I will rely upon your recollection.â
With that agreed, the doctors set out for the mill house just after tea. Choosing to ride for convenience and speed, they arrived with nearly two hours before dusk would impair their sight. As it was, the house stood in the shadows of the encroaching forest, and as they approached, it appeared sinister, reflecting its solemn façade in the pond as if to speak a warning. However, the visitors were men of science and no flights of fancy would deter their mission. Dismounting, the physicians greeted the sole unfortunate constable whose task it was to keep away the curious.
